Giving Back: Sharing My Experience as a Producer During Industry Week

Writer: Shannon R. HammondShannon R. Hammond

Last year, I had the pleasure of returning to my old university to speak with students during Industry Week. It was a fantastic opportunity to share insights into the world of producing, its importance in the industry, and the different paths one can take to build a successful career in production management.

During my talk, I discussed the many roles that fall under the ‘producer’ title, from Production Coordinator to Line Producer, Event Producer, and beyond. One of my key messages to the students was that producing is not just about logistics—it’s about creative problem-solving, team leadership, and bringing projects to life in a way that allows directors and cinematographers to focus on their vision.

I also walked them through the process of script analysis—something I do at the early stages of any project. I explained how breaking down a script by locations, characters, props, special effects, and camera requirements helps determine whether a project is feasible and how to plan a realistic budget. I shared stories from my own experience, including moments where unexpected challenges forced me to pivot quickly, such as rewriting a script when a lead actor dropped out mid-production.

Another key point of discussion was the importance of adaptability and financial management. I detailed how a producer’s job doesn’t end once a film is shot—it extends into post-production, marketing, and distribution. Whether it's securing funding, negotiating contracts, or finding the right festival circuit, a producer is involved every step of the way.

It was incredibly rewarding to engage with the students and hear their questions about breaking into the industry. Many were surprised by just how many avenues exist within producing—whether in film, television, commercials, or live events. My goal was to highlight that while directing and cinematography are often the most sought-after roles, production is the backbone of any successful project, and there are many exciting career paths within it.

It was a privilege to return to where my own journey began and to hopefully inspire the next generation of producers. I look forward to seeing where their careers take them!
