FILM REVIEW: FREE GUY

Don't have a good day. Have a great day.”

I was lucky enough to watch Free Guy two days early thanks to Cineworld's Secret Unlimited Screening. When sitting there waiting for the reveal, Free Guy comes up with a round of applause that echoes around the cinema.

As a general rule I do not like to watch any trailers before going to see a movie, this is as everyone knows because they normally put the best parts in and by doing so spoil the film, so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Inherently, the film was a good. It hit all the beats to be a good action comedy. However if you are into gaming or in the game industry the inaccuracies will definitely pull you out.

The writers Matt Lieberman (Scoob! 2020, Playing with Fire 2019) and Zak Penn (Ready Player One 2018, Avengers Assemble 2012) got on the surface of what a game company and gaming experience are like, the look and feel was spot on, it’s only when certain terminology within the film and the actions they take do not add up. Its clear that Matt and Zak had done some researching into the industry to have a very basic understanding, however I believe to make a film that is so deeply rooted in games and the companies surrounding those games that it requires a better understanding of what goes into actually creating them.

Free Guy had a great premise for a good film and it was a good comedy that is made for mainstream audiences, but if your anything like my partner than all the inaccuracies will pull you away from the film and impact your enjoyment.

“I’m not gonna be a good guy. I’m gonna be a great guy.”
