Behind the Scenes: Bringing Bambi: The Reckoning to Life

Updated: Mar 16

Behind the Scenes: Working on Bambi: The Reckoning

In September 2024, I had the opportunity to join Bambi: The Reckoning as the Additional Photography Production Manager and 1st Assistant Director.

Coming on board after the original principal photography, my role was to help ensure the new footage integrated seamlessly with the existing material—both in terms of style and storytelling. Additional photography is often about refining and enhancing a film, filling in gaps, or improving sequences, which meant careful planning and execution were crucial.

Steering the Shoot as 1st Assistant Director

As 1st AD, my primary responsibility was to maintain structure and efficiency on set while supporting the director’s vision. Stepping into an ongoing production meant quickly familiarising myself with the original shoot’s approach and ensuring continuity in performance, cinematography, and tone.

  • Script Breakdown & Scheduling: I analysed the script to map out the necessary locations, characters, props, and technical requirements, structuring a realistic and efficient shooting schedule.

  • On-Set Coordination: I acted as the key liaison between departments, ensuring seamless communication between the director, cast, and crew to keep everything running smoothly.

  • Time Management & Problem-Solving: Additional photography often means working to tight deadlines. Whether adjusting to last-minute changes, dealing with unforeseen logistical issues, or managing time constraints, I had to think on my feet to keep production on track.

  • Safety Management: With action-heavy sequences, I worked closely with stunt teams to ensure all safety protocols were followed, keeping both cast and crew protected without compromising efficiency.

Managing Production Logistics

Alongside my role as 1st AD, I also worked as Additional Photography Production Manager, overseeing the behind-the-scenes operations that kept the shoot running smoothly.

  • Resource & Crew Management: I ensured every department had the necessary personnel, equipment, and materials to deliver high-quality work under tight deadlines.

  • Hiring & Contracts: I managed crew hiring, handling contracts and ensuring compliance with industry regulations and union guidelines.

  • Logistics: With additional photography often taking place at different locations or on a tighter timeframe, I coordinated transport, accommodation, and schedules to keep everything streamlined.

A Fast-Paced and Rewarding Experience

Joining Bambi: The Reckoning after the original principal photography was both an exciting and challenging experience. Additional photography is a crucial part of filmmaking—it requires precision, adaptability, and a deep understanding of both the creative and logistical sides of production. Stepping into an established project meant ensuring every new shot aligned perfectly with what had already been captured, creating a seamless final product.

It was a privilege to work with such a talented team, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. This film is a bold and thrilling reimagining, and I’m proud to have played a part in bringing it to life.

Stay tuned!
